She was born in Brooklyn, New York, way back in 1893.

At just five years old, she got her first taste of acting, entertaining an audience at a church event. When her parents realized their daughter’s immense potential, they decided to help her develop it. By the age of seven, she was already a star in local amateur shows.

In her youth, Mae also frequently won top prizes in New York talent competitions. At 14, she was already a professional, performing in vaudeville with the “Hal Clarendon Stock Company.” By 18, she was a star in a Broadway show, specifically the 1911 revue “A La Broadway.” Mae’s career as an actress was on a fast track to success.

Like any true actress, Mae had a couple of stage names. As a child, she went by “Baby Mae,” and a little older, she adopted “Jane Mast.”

Mae’s path to acting fame was anything but ordinary. In an era of strict censorship and moral conservatism, she fearlessly pushed boundaries.

Acting Fame

Mae was an incredibly versatile and creative person. She not only honed her acting skills but also became an accomplished playwright. Between the 1920s and 1930s, she wrote plays such as “The Wicked Age,” “The Pleasure Man,” “The Constant Sinner,” and “Diamond Lil.”

Mae’s plays were incredibly risqué. They sparked both controversy and admiration. The city authorities weren’t fond of them, and religious groups were offended. Yet, despite all this, Mae’s plays consistently sold out. In one instance, after a performance, the theater where Mae worked was raided, and she and the rest of the cast were arrested. This was all due to the blatant frankness of her shows.

The constant controversy surrounding Mae’s plays kept her in the headlines of local and national magazines and newspapers. Thanks to this publicity, her shows became so popular that tickets were impossible to get. And her 1928 play, “Diamond Lil,” became a true Broadway legend.

From a young age, Mae knew acting was her calling. She worked relentlessly to succeed in it. Her long-awaited breakthrough role on the silver screen came in 1933 when she starred in the film “She Done Him Wrong.” Mae gained fame not only for her impeccable acting but also for her legendary line from the film: “Why don’t you come up sometime and see me?” The film’s success brought Mae international recognition. In the 1930s, she became the most popular, sought-after, and highest-paid movie actress in the United States.

The 1930s were an incredibly productive time for Mae. In addition to “She Done Him Wrong,” she also appeared in:

“I’m No Angel”

“Klondike Annie”

“Go West, Young Man”

“Every Day’s a Holiday”

and others.

Mae’s acting career continued to flourish. In the 1940s, she began to participate actively in radio shows. She was a regular guest on various programs and events, as she was one of the 20th century’s most controversial actresses. She also played a part in the breakdown of the studio system in the US. She pioneered a new type of comedy that challenged conventional beliefs, and audiences during the Great Depression absolutely adored her for it.

Later Life and Death

Despite the negative reactions from censors and other conservative individuals, Mae never apologized for her provocative image. She remained true to herself until the end of her days. She embraced her sexuality and refused to conform to societal expectations. Her boldness and unwavering self-confidence captured the public’s attention and made her a true American sex symbol of the 20th century. Furthermore, she contributed to the empowerment of women.

Until the end of her life, Mae continued to actively pursue her passion: acting. She had hundreds of roles, stage performances, and written plays to her name. Her fearless and sassy demeanor, along with her undeniable talent, captivated audiences. She was rightfully considered a true Hollywood legend. In 1999, after Mae’s death, the American Film Institute named her the 15th greatest female screen legend of classic American cinema.

Mae passed away in 1980. One summer morning, she got out of bed and stumbled, and when she was found, she was on the floor, unable to speak. After being hospitalized, doctors diagnosed Mae with a stroke.
