Minetta Tavern — The Village Clubhouse Where Every Era Left Its Signature

Walking into Minetta Tavern feels like being let in on something. The caricatures on the walls have watched since 1937, the tin ceiling has heard a century of arguments, and the red banquettes hold couples, editors and prizefight ghosts in equal comfort. Keith McNally didn’t so much renovate this Greenwich Village tavern as wake it up.

The Story

The tavern opened in 1937 above the buried Minetta Brook and became the Village’s living room — Hemingway, Ezra Pound, E.E. Cummings and Dylan Thomas drank here, and the eccentric Joe Gould famously used the bar as his mailing address. The basement of the building had already made history: Reader’s Digest was founded there in 1922. After the old family era closed in 2008, McNally’s 2009 revival kept every mural and caricature, added Parisian steakhouse cooking, and collected three New York Times stars and years of Michelin recognition — while the Black Label Burger became a celebrity in its own right.

What to Order

Start with roasted bone marrow or the hand-cut tartare topped with a quail egg. Then choose your legend: the dry-aged Black Label Burger under sweet caramelized onions, or the côte de boeuf for two when the night deserves theatre. The weekend brunch — Benedicts, lemon-ricotta waffle, steak and eggs — is the calmest way to meet the room. Finish with crêpes Suzette or the soufflé for two, because leaving without fire or chocolate would be a waste of setting.

The Space

Checkerboard floors, a long wooden bar polished by generations of elbows, boxing photos, and the beloved back room wrapped in 1953 murals of Village street life. Lighting is low, banquettes are crimson, tables are close — eavesdropping is not just possible but traditional.
