La Grande Boucherie — Belle Époque Paris, Hiding Mid-Block in Midtown

Some restaurants you recommend for a dish; this one you recommend for the gasp. Walking into La Grande Boucherie feels like stepping through a portal into 1900s Paris — gilded archways, forests of greenery, waiters gliding under a glowing antique skylight — except the Broadway theatres are minutes away and the champagne is already on ice.

The Story

Emil Stefkov of The Group NYC unveiled this grand brasserie in late 2020, when opening one of Manhattan’s biggest restaurants seemed like madness — and it instantly became a symbol of the city refusing to dim. It occupies the covered pedestrian arcade nicknamed 6½ Avenue, a semi-secret passage threading between Midtown towers, which the restaurant transformed into a lantern-lit Parisian square with heated year-round terrace seating.

What to Order

Order like a boulevardier: a plateau de fruits de mer stacked with oysters and lobster to start, then steak frites, filet mignon au poivre or the dramatic côte de boeuf for two. The onion soup gratinée and escargots are the comfort classics; boeuf bourguignon and canard à l’orange the deep cuts. At the bar, absinthe is poured the ceremonial way, through a dripping fountain, and cocktails like La Vie en Rose match the décor. Dessert is non-negotiable — profiteroles under warm chocolate or a hazelnut Paris-Brest.

The Space

An Art Nouveau dreamscape by designer Julien Legeard: forty-foot glass ceilings, two mezzanines gazing over the main floor, hand-sculpted plaster ferns with gold patina, French cast-iron railings and more than a hundred champagne-toned lamps. The hand-painted glass skylight is a genuine antique, sourced at a Paris flea market from an estate near the Opéra Garnier. Every table seems designed for a photograph — and the room still manages to feel warm rather than staged.

Who It’s For

Anniversaries and birthdays, pre-Broadway dinners that set the tone for the show, visiting friends you want to dazzle, and dates when only old-world glamour will do.

Good to Know

Should I book ahead? Yes — evenings and weekends fill fast; the bar and Green Hour are the spontaneous route in.

Is it good before a Broadway show? Ideal — the theatres are a short walk, and the staff are used to curtain-time deadlines.

What’s the dress vibe? Smart casual, though the room quietly rewards dressing up.

Can I sit outside? Yes — the glass-canopied gallery along the arcade is heated and open in every season.

Does it host groups and events? Very well — several private rooms and mezzanines handle everything from small parties to full celebrations.

La Grande Boucherie: An exceptional pre-theatre gem (January 2024). My partner and I visited La Grande Boucherie in January 2024 for an early pre-theatre dinner. We decided to use their pre-theatre menu, and honestly, it…

Such an incredible experience. This restaurant is just wonderful, the courtyard offers a wonderful view, especially given the festive decor, but be aware that in winter the courtyard is very cold, and although it's 'insi…

Any time a restaurant is set inside an atrium between two buildings in Manhattan, it offers a captivating view and atmosphere. The food here is typical bistro fare, casual. Escargot, steak tartare, escargot, gazpacho and…

I didn't find it tasty. The service is slow. There are an extraordinary number of people, cramped next to other tables. But what struck me more was the almost shared-with-men restroom, which was also far too cramped.
